Listed below is a Course of Study for 21st Century Literacy. These continuing education courses are especially for school library media specialists and language arts teachers although open to all. Courses of Study are designed for educators with a master's degree who seek intensive professional development through a course of study approved for a plus 15 salary increment. EDLM 667-194 & 195 Graphic Novels This course is designed to teach the learner about the format of graphic novels and their educational and cultural connections. The course explores literacy connections, graphic novel titles, resources for graphic novels, and curricular applications. This is a UD online course offered Spring '08 and Fall '08. Alyson Lygra, instructor. 3 credit hours EDLM 667-910 Folklore Folklore will explore the role multicultural literature plays in creating a global awareness of world cultures and the ways it meets curriculum standards. Focus will be on evaluation, selection, and use of authentic multicultural literature. Offered Winter '09. Elisabeth Simmons, instructor. 3 credit hours EDLM 667-410 Digital Storytelling This course will explore the fundamentals of digital storytelling in a classroom environment. Topics include elements of effective storytelling, teacher and student roles, storyboarding, instructional design, and assessment. Offered 1st Summer session '08. Paul Hyde, instructor. 3 credit hours EDLM 667-011 Information Fluency for the 21st Century This course, designed for teachers in grades 3-12, will focus on developing media and information fluent students for the 21st century. Participants will explore various research strategies, evaluate curriculum specific online resources, delve into subscription databases, and create student-centered research projects. This course is part of the Summer Institute in Educational and Assistive Technology, July 7-18, 2008. Suzanne Smith, instructor. 3 credit hours EDLM 602-010 & 910 Childhood Literature This course is a survey of literature for children and its application to the curriculum. It includes a study of literacy genre, elements and devices found in children's books, aids for selection, criteria for evaluation and techniques for promoting reading. Offered 1st Summer session '08, Kristina Najera, instructor and 2nd Summer session '08, Elisabeth Simmons, instructor. 3 credit hours OR EDLM 603-010 Literature for Adolescents This course is an evaluation of classic and contemporary reading materails and their application ot the secondary school curriculum. A study of criteria, methods and tools for selection of books and techniques for developing and promoting reading will be investigated. Offered Spring '08 (special section for librarians) and 1st Summer session '08.
